Seasonal
Garden Ideas.

Seasonal garden ideas start with timing, which is most of gardening. Bulbs go in six months before they flower, biennials a full year ahead, and Christmas planters need buying while it’s still mild. Here: what to plant and do in each season, holiday decorating with the dates that matter, and what’s actually in flower month by month.

Warmer zones run two to three weeks ahead, colder ones the same behind. These are the guides for right now.

Editor’s note

Bulbs go in six months early. Plan a season ahead.

Autumn is the season that decides next year. Daffodils and alliums go in during September, tulips in October — last, because they rot in warm soil. Sow foxgloves and wallflowers in summer for flowers the year after. And leave the seed heads standing over winter: echinacea, rudbeckia and grasses feed birds and hold their shape under frost.

How to Plan a Four-Season Garden

A four-season garden uses 5 steps: structure, evergreens, a mix of trees, shrubs and perennials, hardscape and color planning for each season. Evergreens such as boxwood, holly and conifers carry the winter shape. Hardscape, including arbors, pergolas, raised beds and a wrought-iron tuteur, holds interest when plants rest. Plan color so that 3 or more plants flower in every month.

Seasonal Garden Ideas by Season

Spring garden ideas

Spring garden ideas start with bulbs, hellebores and pruning. Plant tulips, daffodils and alliums in autumn when soil drops below 10 °C (50 °F). Sow hardy annuals, divide perennials and start seeds under cover.

Summer garden ideas

Summer garden ideas rely on perennials, roses and containers. Water deeply once or twice a week, deadhead weekly and feed containers every 2 weeks. See dahlia flower gardens for late-summer color.

Autumn garden ideas

Autumn garden ideas cover bulb planting, leaf mulch and division. Plant garlic cloves 5 cm (2 in) deep, rake leaves into leaf mold and lay a 5 cm (2 in) mulch layer. Asters, sedum and grasses carry color into November.

Winter garden ideas

Winter garden ideas use structure: evergreens, seed heads, bark and hellebores. Protect tender plants with frost cloth, and prune dormant fruit trees and roses in late winter. The greenhouse gardens guide shows 8 winter spaces.

Seasonal Container Gardening and Seasonal Decor

Seasonal containers change 4 times a year: pansies and bulbs in spring, annuals in summer, grasses and heuchera in autumn, evergreens in winter. Holiday decor uses garden material, and two guides show how: rustic Christmas wreath ideas and Christmas porch decor ideas. Buy seasonal containers early, while the weather stays mild.

Seasonal Garden Plans and Maintenance by Zone

  • Zone 6 (−23 to −18 °C / −10 to 0 °F): last frost around early May, first frost around mid-October.
  • Zone 7 (−18 to −12 °C / 0 to 10 °F): last frost around mid-April, first frost around late October.
  • Warmer zones run 2 to 3 weeks ahead, and colder zones run 2 to 3 weeks behind.

A seasonal garden calendar lists 4 jobs per season: plant, prune, feed and protect. Pair this plan with the cottage garden border or flower garden bloom calendar.
